• Is repentance merely acknowledgement of sin? Sorrow for sin? Or something more?
• Is repentance essential for salvation?
• Are there other actions that are part of repentance, or that directly follow from it?

Discussion:

Once again I found the bible verses very meaningful, they showed many aspects to understanding repentance.
My understanding was given in a sermon I heard 40 years ago which stated the basic meaning of repentance is to do a 180 degree turn, that it’s essentially a reversal of direction, and these verses confirm that, as well as many other key insights:

1 Kings 8:47-48, 2Ch 32:26 – Repentance is associated with “a change of heart”, a confession of sin, and a turning back to God with all our heart and soul, and praying to God.

Job 34:31-33 is revealing, it suggests that merely admitting guilt is viewed by God as refusing to repent.

But this is explained by the gem of a verse in Psalm 51:17, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise”

Isaiah 30:15 speaks of how salvation and strength involves repentance and rest, leading to quietness and trust in God.

Jeremiah 8:6 is like that sermon, it says to repent involves changing the course we pursue, and this is amplified in:
Ezekiel 14:6, 18:30 which states that repentance is to turn from our idols and renounce all our detestable practices, turn away from all our offenses; in order for sin to not be our downfall.

Ezekiel 18:32 Is another gem of a verse: “For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!” So repentance is the gateway to life itself!

In Matthew 11:20, 12:41, Jesus denounced those who did not repent.

In Matthew 21:32, Jesus associated repentance with belief, saying, “you did not repent and believe him.”

Luke 5:32, Jesus states he came to call sinners to repentance.

Luke 13:3 Jesus makes clear the necessity of repentance, “unless you repent, you too will perish”. We can conclude repentance is essential for forgiveness and the gift of eternal life.

Luke 15:10 is joyful, but it also stresses the importance of repentance. It says there is “rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

We might ask why is repentance so important and essential for forgiveness, but the answer is given in:
Luke 18:13-14, where Jesus compared the Pharisees who trusted in themselves and despised others, with a tax collector who, “beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’” Jesus explained “this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Only when we see our need for repentance do we see ourselves in the right relation to God, otherwise we remain self-important and putting ourselves in the place of God.

In the Great Commission in Luke 24:47, Jesus commanded the preaching of the two linked items of repentance and forgiveness of sins to all nations.

Acts 3:19 shows repentance involves turning – to God – as a condition for forgiveness.

Acts 5:31 suggests that repentance is also a gift from our Saviour Jesus, that it is not in our own power of fallen mankind.

Acts 17:30 — Turning to God in repentance is a commandment of God, and is joined with faith.

Acts 26:20 — The proof of repentance is that it leads to a change in our deeds.

2 Corinthians 7:10 states “Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.” I suggest the worldly type is sorrow for getting caught, while Godly sorrow comes from the heart.

2 Timothy 2:25 confirms repentance is given by God, and also leads us to know the truth. For only through repentance can we come to truly see ourselves as we really are.

2 Peter 3:9 confirms repentance is essential to avoid perishing, but it also reveals the heart of God, He “does not want anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

I think those verses cover all the questions I thought of.
