What is our purpose in life, why are we here, what are we here for?<\/p>\n
The hit song, \u201cAlfie\u201d, released in 1966 by Cilla Black in the UK, had as it\u2019s main recurring question, \u201cWhat\u2019s it all about?\u201d<\/p>\n
The lyrics (below) have a number of questions flowing from that one basic question.\u00a0 Other variations on the question might be those above, \u201cWhat is the purpose of life?\u201d, and \u201cWhat are we here for?\u201d<\/p>\n
The sad fact of life is that it goes by all too quickly.\u00a0 When young, we might make decisions in a carefree way, only to find in later years that, with each choice we make along the way, multiple other opportunities are closed and lost forever.\u00a0 What was our path meant to have been?<\/p>\n
In my late teens, while staying at a mainstream Christian-based university residential college, I put the above question to a coffee gathering, which included fellow students and a professor.\u00a0 The unanimous response I received was, \u201cYou don\u2019t ask that type of question!\u201d\u00a0 The consensus was that we just accept the social values and aims (or idols?) we have been given, and run with those as hard as we can.\u00a0 For students who have chosen a career to study, perhaps that is the best way to graduate and progress in their career.
But that answer never satisfied me.<\/p>\n
