About this site

When a friend asked about Christian beliefs, I tried to find a good reference to offer, but I wasn’t happy with what I saw on the internet. The sites I found did not convey the personal meaning and uplifting inspiration that I have been given in the Christian faith.

That prompted me to record a brief summary for my friend on this website, in the hope it may also be useful to others − for that summary, see “Basic Belief” and “Creeds”.

But what I have found about Christian belief is that it is NOT a fixed and complete set of philosophical statements, that is for the realm of human theories. It is instead a journey of a lived experience of trust, where each day may bring new and deeper understanding. It’s about real life rather than human logic.

So, I also set up a forum for discussing life’s difficult questions (see “Questions”), and exploring what the bible can reveal (see “Discover”).

And I also set up the “Reflections” section to share my personal thoughts. These are not fixed, but grow with time.

Some people I have known were sent to the best private church schools and learnt just enough about Christian belief to get a wrong understanding and reject that. I have known people who, when facing pain and loss, received well-meant advice from churchy friends that seemed like unfeeling platitudes. Real life has plenty of dark valleys, and it’s the difficult challenges and hard questions that can lead us to understand how Christian faith makes perfect sense of life’s harsh realities.

This site is not intended for debate for or against Christian beliefs, but to provide a forum in the Questions section to explore life’s ultimate questions and confusions, to clarify what Christian belief is about in contrast to its popular image.

Christian belief becomes personal and meaningful when found from bible verses, so I hope you will enjoy using the Discover section.

Please share your questions, concerns, and thoughts. Use the Contact form,  Comments boxes, or submit posts. Due to the feral nature of so much of internet activity, I will moderate entries before listing them.

References to helpful website links or published books are also welcome, and I will list them in the Links page.

Let us explore!

Human Perspective

A few years ago, I read that 95% of the universe was unknowable, as it was composed of dark matter, about which we could gather no data.

When I mentioned this to a retired research scientist, he suggested a further uncertainty.  He explained that dark matter had been postulated as a solution to unexpected results from the formula for gravity between known bodies in the universe.  But this formula, which works for the distances in our solar system, may not be valid for the huge interstellar distances to which it was being applied.

In summary, he thought we don’t even know how much we can never know, but it seems to be most of everything!

Yet what we have been given to know is fascinating, so let us see.

Aims and Assumptions

Given this uncertainty, what basis do we use for our reflection?

My aim in this site is to present the Christian perspective from my understanding, but also to enable people to present different understandings.

Here, the bible will be used as the source for guidance, but I realise some denominations may vary in how much emphasis is given to the bible.

The pages outlining basic belief can only give a dry skeleton, while I hope the reflection pages will give an understanding that is relevant to you.

"To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven:"

Ecclesiastes 3:1

"(the sons of men) He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end."

Ecclesiastes 3:11

"Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, Before the difficult days come, And the years draw near when you say, 'I have no pleasure in them'."

Ecclesiastes 12:1
