Acts 3:16:
“And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.”

Question: How is it that “through faith in His name” brought about this healing of the lame man?

Faith in His name

We have many verses in the New Testament where Jesus said, “Your faith has healed you”, but in this verse, there was no evidence that the lame man had faith in Jesus, although he did praise God after the healing.

Jesus also performed other miracles which were not related to a person’s faith, but simply given to show that he was the son of God.

Jesus had also promised his disciples in Matthew 17:20 that ‘if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.'”
The miracle of the healing of the lame man was as promised by Jesus, it rested on the faith of Peter and John, and was given to show the message that Peter then proclaimed, that Jesus, whom they had crucified, was indeed the son of God, the long awaited Messiah.

The phrase the “Name of Jesus” does not present “name” as a mere word as a label. Biblical usage of the term name represents the very person indicated by the name, so it best to read this as “faith in the person” of Jesus. So, this faith is a personal relationship with Jesus, not a mental agreement but a heartfelt trust and commitment.

Personal

It is this personal faith that gives us the power to overcome the mountainous obstacles in our lives that would otherwise reduce us to despair. That promise is repeated in Mark 11:23, where Jesus says, “if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.”

This promise gives us amazing power to do all that Jesus has planned for us. But we can only be completely free of doubt and believe it will happen when we are perfectly obedient to his will. When we are perfectly in his path, it will be done.

Praise God for his amazing gift.
