“Open my eyes, that I may see
Wondrous things from Your law.”
Question: What do we understand by saying, “God, open my eyes”
What does God enable us to see?
His almighty power
In 2 kings 6, the King of Syria sent a great army to capture Elisha, and surrounded the city, but Elisha prayed for his frightened servant – verse 17, “Elisha prayed, and said, ‘Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.’ Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
His provision
In Genesis 21, God enabled Hagar to see a well of water after her son was about to die of thirst – verse 19, “And God opened her eyes, and she saw.”
Himself
God enables us to see Him, and turn to Him.
In John 9, Jesus healed a man blind from birth, who came away seeing after washing in the pool. But his real sight was shown when the Pharisees were questioning him. In verse 29 they admitted, “as for this fellow, we do not know where He is from.” The man replied – verse 32, “Since the world began it has been unheard of that anyone opened the eyes of one who was born blind. If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing.”
While the Pharisees had physical sight, they were blind to the presence of God amongst them, but the healed man saw God present in Jesus, that was the real miracle of healing this man.
Understanding and Hope through Jesus
In Ephesians 1:18-20, Paul prays that God may give, “the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places”
Love
During Jill’s testimony which was played during the evening service last night, she described how after receiving Jesus, when she next saw her father whom she had never got along with, she simply loved him.
To see with eyes of love is perhaps the greatest miracle of all, when we can see people in the way God sees them – as Jesus sees us, even while we were sinners He gave His life for us.
Praise God for His miracle of sight.
